The Theory of Aromatic Plant Distillation

Course Description

This module covers a theoretical and historical introduction to distillation.  It is intended to give the students a perspective on the history of distillation, looking at how the apparel and the techniques changed and evolved over the centuries, and at the improvements each component of the still has seen over time. It also gives a simple (no equations) but strong basis on the physics of distillation, necessary to build a foundation that can be used later on to understand the nuances of practical distillation. This will involve trying to describe what happens inside a still, and how it differs from what happens in a laboratory distillation unit.
